StoryShards — a daily jigsaw that opens one chapter of a story

English · 日本語版

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the daily chapter work?

Each calendar day brings one jigsaw. Solving it opens that day's chapter of the story, and the next one arrives the following day. Days are counted in the home time zone shown in Settings, not in UTC. The story and the daily puzzle are free, and stay free — including in future seasons.

Do I ever have to watch an ad to read the story?

No. The daily puzzle and the daily chapter have no ads and no purchase prompts at all. Ads exist only in the two optional places described further down.

It says the day couldn't be verified, or that it needs a connection.

"One chapter per day" is measured against a clock that you can't move by changing the device's date — the app reads the time from the response to its ordinary check for story corrections. So it needs to reach the network occasionally.

Nothing is ever taken away from you. On a very first launch with no connection at all you can open the first chapter; after that, opening a new chapter needs a check-in. If you have been offline for a long stretch, the app lets you finish the last day it verified and then waits. Reconnect once and it picks up immediately.

I travelled, or I changed my time zone. What happens?

You can set your home time zone in Settings. A change takes effect at the next day boundary rather than instantly, and you can't return to a day that has already been used. This is deliberate — it keeps "one chapter a day" honest without punishing genuine travel. Your progress is never reduced by a time zone change.

Can I re-read earlier chapters?

The 7 most recently opened chapters can be re-read and their puzzles replayed at any time, for free. Everything older lives in the Archive, which is part of the paid plans below. Chapters you have already read are never removed from your record.

What do the paid plans include?

There are two ways to pay, and they are for different things:

Prices at the time of writing are US$2.99/month, US$14.99/year and US$24.99 one-time (¥400 / ¥2,000 / ¥3,500 in Japan). The purchase sheet always shows the actual price for your region.

If I cancel my subscription, do I lose the chapters I read with Early Access?

No. Any chapter you have actually read stays readable, forever, whether you read it through daily progress or Early Access. Cancelling stops the Archive and future Early Access, and ads come back — it does not reach back and take away what you have read.

How do I restore my purchase?

Tap "Restore purchases" in Settings — it is always there, whether or not you have bought anything. You need to be signed in with the same Apple Account used for the purchase. If it doesn't appear, restart the app, confirm the Apple Account, then contact us below.

How do I cancel or change my subscription?

Tap "Manage subscription" in Settings, which opens your App Store subscription settings. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Cancelling there is the only way to stop renewal — deleting the app does not cancel it.

Where is my progress stored? I want to switch devices.

Your progress is stored on your iPhone and, if you're signed in to iCloud, synced automatically to your own iCloud account — there is no button to press. Install the app on the other device, sign in to the same iCloud account, and the two records merge: a chapter read on either device counts on both, and neither one overwrites the other.

If you're not signed in to iCloud, everything still works; progress simply stays on that device, and deleting the app erases it. Purchases are separate — use "Restore purchases" with the same Apple Account. See the Privacy Policy for what is and isn't synced.

Tell me about the ads.

Ads are rewarded video only — no banners, no forced interstitials, and never inside the daily puzzle or the daily chapter. There are exactly two optional rewards, both in the replay and archive screens: 3 extra hints, and opening one archive chapter for today. Rewards are fixed and are granted only when the video finishes. If an ad can't load, nothing is charged and everything keeps working. Subscribers and Season 1 owners get those same rewards without watching anything.

Is there a gacha or a loot box?

No. Nothing random is ever sold, and there is no in-game currency to buy. The only paid items are the subscription and the one-time Season 1 purchase, and both grant fixed, stated features.

I'm stuck on a puzzle.

Every daily puzzle comes with 3 free hints, no ad required, and they reset each day. You also choose the piece count yourself — 25, 49, 100, 144 or 240 pieces, with 100 as the default — so a day that feels too long can simply be made smaller. A puzzle in progress is saved on that device, so you can put it down and come back to it.

I found a typo, or a line that reads wrong.

Please tell us. The story text ships inside the app, but it can be corrected without an App Store update — the app checks for a small correction file each time it opens. Email the chapter number and the sentence, and we'll look at it. Corrections only ever replace text in existing chapters; they can't add, remove or reorder chapters.

How was this made?

The illustrations and the story were both created with generative AI, then reviewed and edited by a human before release. The chapter illustrations are original artwork made for this app in a single consistent style — they are illustrations of the story, not photographs of real places — and every character, place and event in the season is fictional. The full disclosure is on the Credits page, and the same wording appears in the app under Settings > About.

Can I get a refund?

All billing and refunds are handled by Apple; we cannot issue refunds directly. Request one at Apple's reportaproblem.apple.com.
